Educators are being challenged to find ways to improve student engagement and integrate relevant technology into the classroom. Yet, there are few examples of successful implementation, and learning environments continue to be structured in the same way. In order to make progress, we need to engage in the process.

One of the mandates of the ILC is to take everyday items, like LEGO and littleBits, and explore their potential in education using design methodology.

Serveh Naghashbandi, candidate for PhD, combined motion sensor technologies (littleBits) with student-built structures in LEGO to demonstrate principles of science and mathematics.

The educational benefits gained through these types of design and construction can also be used to enhance the social studies and language arts curriculum to bring deeper meaning to historical or current events and the visualization of literature, etc.
